Wood Prairie Organic Rye-Vetch Seed Mix.

Wood Prairie Organic Rye-Vetch Mix. Secale cereale, Vicea villosa. Sturdy Rye provides fast cover and support for the sprawling legume Vetch. Same Winter Rye-Hairy Vetch recipe Eliot Coleman uses for fertility independence which he explains in The Self-Fed Farm and Garden. Typically, Rye-Vetch mix is sown in Fall, turned under the following Spring, and then veggies can be planted four weeks later. Eliot’s unique soil-building alternative is to plant the mix in mid-October, letting it grow until August, then chopping and letting the crop re-seed itself and re-grow. The cover crop is finally incorporated the following April, 18 months after initial planting. Whichever method you choose, seeding rate is 4 lbs./1000 sq.ft. or 90 lbs/acre. Pkt. Plants 20 sq.ft.

Shipping information

Most customers ask us to ship orders at the Best Time for Spring Potato Planting based on our 50-State Chart.

However, we do ship our Seed Potatoes 52 Weeks/Year, whenever you want them.  We harvest our crop of Organic Maine Certified Seed Potatoes in September. We begin shipping this New Crop by November 1 (sometimes earlier) and continue shipping from our on-farm underground Potato Storage, every week through the Winter & Spring & Summer until October 31.

All new potato tubers grown anywhere must go through a Dormancy Period after harvest before tubers will sprout and grow. This dormancy lasts 4-8 weeks. For planting after December 1, the dormancy concern becomes a non-issue because our Seed Potatoes will have completed their rest period and will sprout and grow when warmed up to room temperature.

Note: Orders which include 45 pound carton(s) of Certified Seed Potatoes and shipped after mid-November and prior to the week of March 24 or between July 1 and September 30 customarily require a $16.00 insulated box fee. If insulated packaging should not be necessary, you will receive a shipping refund automatically. Feel free to call (207) 429-9765 (M-F 8:00-5:00pm ET) for a Rate Quote.
