Red Fife Wheat artwork with a red banner, white background, and black rectangular border

Wheat Seed. Organic Red Fife. Heirloom.

NEW! Wheat Seed. Organic Red Fife. Heirloom. Triticum aestivum. Rare, heritage bread wheat first grown in Ontario, Canada in 1840 by farmer David Fife. Believed to have originated in Ukraine. Legendary baking quality and exceptional robust taste. Red Fife is a landrace wheat which means there is genetic diversity which allows the wheat to adapt. Most commonly planted as HRS (Hard Red Spring) Wheat. Between 1860 and 1900, Red Fife reigned as the dominant wheat across Canada. Red Fife was saved from near extinction by Organic farmers beginning in 1988. After years of steady growth, the Red Fife Presidium was the first established in Canada in 2003 after Red Fife had become Canada’s first nominee for the Slow Food Ark of Taste Award. In 2006, over 200 tons of Red Fife seed was harvested on organic farms across Canada, all of it tracing back to the one-pound of seed planted in 1988.

Seed at 3 lbs./1000 sq. ft. or 100 pounds per acre. 12,000 seeds per pound. Pkt plants 12 sq.ft.

Shipping information

Most customers ask us to ship orders at the Best Time for Spring Potato Planting based on our 50-State Chart.

However, we do ship our Seed Potatoes 52 Weeks/Year, whenever you want them.  We harvest our crop of Organic Maine Certified Seed Potatoes in September. We begin shipping this New Crop by November 1 (sometimes earlier) and continue shipping from our on-farm underground Potato Storage, every week through the Winter & Spring & Summer until October 31.

All new potato tubers grown anywhere must go through a Dormancy Period after harvest before tubers will sprout and grow. This dormancy lasts 4-8 weeks. For planting after December 1, the dormancy concern becomes a non-issue because our Seed Potatoes will have completed their rest period and will sprout and grow when warmed up to room temperature.

Note: Orders which include 45 pound carton(s) of Certified Seed Potatoes and shipped after mid-November and prior to the week of March 24 or between July 1 and September 30 customarily require a $16.00 insulated box fee. If insulated packaging should not be necessary, you will receive a shipping refund automatically. Feel free to call (207) 429-9765 (M-F 8:00-5:00pm ET) for a Rate Quote.
