This hard-neck variety was discovered growing as a wild sport or seedling on an abandoned farm, which had not been cultivated for many years, in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region. Several bulbs were noticed to be larger and better looking than the rest; these formed a basis for propagating this new variety. Lyubasha was subsequently registered with Ukraine's State Register of Plant Varieties in 2008. Bulbs are large, often reaching four ounces, and boldly striped in purple, typically containing 4-6 plump cloves. The flavor is intense, rather pungent with a robust aroma as well. Due to high content of both solids and volatile oils, bulbs store well for long periods, and have been known to keep for up to 11 months. Excellent hardiness and tolerance to a wide range of growing conditions complete the picture, making Lyubasha a standout, whether grown in the home garden or for market!

Most customers ask us to ship orders at the Best Time for Spring Potato Planting based on our 50-State Chart.

However, we do ship our Seed Potatoes 52 Weeks/Year, whenever you want them. We harvest our crop of Organic Maine Certified Seed Potatoes in September. We begin shipping this New Crop by November 1 (sometimes earlier) and continue shipping from our on-farm underground Potato Storage, every week through the Winter & Spring & Summer until October 31.

All new potato tubers grown anywhere must go through a Dormancy Period after harvest before tubers will sprout and grow. This dormancy lasts 4-8 weeks. For planting after December 1, the dormancy concern becomes a non-issue because our Seed Potatoes will have completed their rest period and will sprout and grow when warmed up to room temperature.

Note: Orders which include 45 pound carton(s) of Certified Seed Potatoes and shipped after mid-November and prior to the week of March 24 or between July 1 and September 30 customarily require a $16.00 insulated box fee.
