Onion Plants. Organic Ailsa Craig.

Organic Onion Plants Ship March & April 2026. NEW! Organic Ailsa Craig Onion Plants. Heirloom.  95 days from transplanting.  Allium cepa.  Colossal, sweet Spanish-type onion has been known to reach up to 5 pounds!  More commonly topping-out at 1-2 pounds, this delicious, mild-flavored fresh type isn't a long-keeper but can be stored for a couple of months. Developed in 1887 by one David Murray, who was the head gardener at Culzean Castle, Ayrshire, Scotland, and named for a notable, perfectly round rock off the Scottish coast. The round to teardrop-shaped bulbs, with pale yellow to almost silvery skins, have been grown by generations of gardeners, particularly adored by those looking to win in their local fairs! This long-day type shows excellent cold-tolerance, making it perfect for Northern gardens.  Long-Day Onion. We ship real live Organic Onion Plants grown in a greenhouse on the Certified Organic family farm of friends in Maine. They are vigorous little Organic Onion plants the diameter of a pencil lead, ready to plant immediately. We have 20 years of first-hand experience successfully growing out these fine Onion plants on our Organic farm. Although small at planting time, these hardy Maine-grown Organic Onion transplants will flourish and grow into beautiful, full-sized long-keeping Onions. Ailsa Craig is ideal for Northern gardens (performs best when grown north of a line from Northern California to Northern Missouri to the Southern border of Pennsylvania). All of our Organic Onion Plants ship on two dates: week of March 30 and week of April 20 (Sorry – not available prior to March 30). Quantities are approximate. Complete Organic Onion Plants Growing Guide included with every order.

Shipping information

Most customers ask us to ship orders at the Best Time for Spring Potato Planting based on our 50-State Chart.

However, we do ship our Seed Potatoes 52 Weeks/Year, whenever you want them.  We harvest our crop of Organic Maine Certified Seed Potatoes in September. We begin shipping this New Crop by November 1 (sometimes earlier) and continue shipping from our on-farm underground Potato Storage, every week through the Winter & Spring & Summer until October 31.

All new potato tubers grown anywhere must go through a Dormancy Period after harvest before tubers will sprout and grow. This dormancy lasts 4-8 weeks. For planting after December 1, the dormancy concern becomes a non-issue because our Seed Potatoes will have completed their rest period and will sprout and grow when warmed up to room temperature.

Note: Orders which include 45 pound carton(s) of Certified Seed Potatoes and shipped after mid-November and prior to the week of March 24 or between July 1 and September 30 customarily require a $16.00 insulated box fee. If insulated packaging should not be necessary, you will receive a shipping refund automatically. Feel free to call (207) 429-9765 (M-F 8:00-5:00pm ET) for a Rate Quote.
