A Situation In Which Timing Really Matters.
Our recent Video (see LINK in Comments) covered Chopping & Chiseling a soil-improving crop of Buckwheat and a Brassica Biofumigant in the fields which next year will grow our crop of Organic Maine Certified Seed Potatoes.
Biofumigation is a proven, natural practice of using certain plants in the Broccoli family to reduce soil-borne pests and cleanse the soil of pathogenic nematodes and fungi. It's important that the last step of chiseling (incorporation of the leafy material into the soil) happens immediately after the chopping, so as to maximize retention of the valuable Glucoinsulates (GSLs). As the green matter decays in the soil, it is the gas given off which performs the Biofumigation action.
Biofumigation can be practiced on a garden-scale as well as this field-scale. In both cases, higher quality crops will be the following result.
In this shot, Caleb is at left chopping with the White 2-135 tractor and our new (used) Italian Maschio flail mower. Justin follows closely behind on a White 2-105 pulling a 9-tooth chisel plow.
