DON’T BLAME THE FARMER! While the cost of this year’s Thanksgiving meal will be up, recurring research by NFU (National Farmers Union) makes clear that the ‘farm gate’ prices farmers receive are NOT theculprit. Instead, corporate monopolies are the ones raiding your wallet!
Most farmers receive just a tiny percentage of the retail food dollar. NFU researchers have charted the ‘Farmer’s Share’ of the retail food dollar for decades. NFU calculates – that on average – farmers receive just 14.3 cents out of every Food Dollar.
According to USDA, off-farm costs, including marketing, processing, wholesaling, distribution and retailing, account for more than 80 cents of every food dollar spent in the United States.
