A BARNFUL OF TROUBLE: AMERICAN DAIRY FARMERS IN EXISTENTIAL CRISIS. Just to be clear, there are TWO separate crises facing American family dairy farmers.
First, conventional family farmers are getting annihilated by the increasing trend of mega consolidation – some confinement operations now milk 30,000 cows or more – and stubbornly low farm-gate-prices, way below the cost of production.
A separate but equally devastating crisis is pummeling ORGANIC family dairy farmers. A "glut" of "organic" milk – has pushed farm-gate-prices down and subjected honest family farmers to painful milk quota reductions. However, the "glut" has been ENTIRELY CREATED by illegal corporate CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) which DO NOT MEET ORGANIC REQUIREMENTS but benefit from collusion with USDA which looks the other way and ignores violations.

Although they're generally coping much better than their conventional dairy counterparts, “organic” is no longer synonymous with “safe” for farmers.
