    Time Now for Christmas.

Beautiful Caribe’ Featured in Our New 2015 Catalog.  This time of year several new seed catalogs arrive in the mail everyday.  Like every gardener, we enjoy paging through the catalogs, discovering new offerings and imagining just what might be worth a try up here with our cool and short growing season in Northern Maine.
Now that our Christmas orders have peaked, we and the neighbors who make up our crew are back to cleaning, grading and packing our many, many lots of organic seed.
Outside today our farm is covered with a foot-and-a-half of snow.  Our woodshed is full of dry firewood and we are snug and warm as the woodstoves burn steady.  Along with our crew, we’ll be taking a few days off to be with family and friends.  We hope you are able to do the same and will be able enjoy these wonderful days ahead.

Christmas Day Weather in Aroostook County, Maine.

The NOAA Weather Service Office in Caribou has just posted a brief article describing historical Christmas Day weather observations for both Caribou in Northern Maine’s Aroostook County, and Bangor in Central Maine.  Weather records have been collected in Caribou since 1939 and in Bangor since 1925.

Caribou’s record low for December 25 is -26ºF (1975), and the record high was 48ºF in both 1964 and 2003.

Statistically, Caribou has a 92% likelihood of snow covering the ground on Christmas Day.  Bangor, further south, has had snow cover 75% of the last ninety Christmas days.

Nationwide, in an average year, 38% of the area of the United States has snow cover.  This year, as of yesterday, Monday December 22, only 26% of the USA has snow cover, the smallest portion for that date in ten years.  Here’s a map showing where the snow cover is this Christmas of 2014.

Powerful Speech by Vandana Shiva.

Eminent Indian food, environmental and social activist leader Vandana Shiva has delivered a powerful speech which aired recently on national public affairs channel, Link TV.  In her speech, Vandana takes to task corporations which have reinvented themselves as “persons” under United States law.

“When the abstract construction becomes persons and being, they will take away the rights and personhood of real people.  That is what we are facing,” explained Vandana.

This short and inspiring excerpt (2:40) from her speech is well worth viewing.

Tide Mill Organic Farmers. There's still time to help these hard working farmers.
Update on Tide Mill Farm Crowdfunding Campaign.

The Bell family, hard-working organic farmers and our good friends at Tide Mill Organic Farm in Downeast Maine are making excellent progress on their Indiegogo Crowdfunding Campaign first reported in the last Seed Piece.

The Bells at Tide Mill Farm have embarked on construction of a major poultry processing facility on their farm.  The poultry enterprise will serve their rural community in extreme Downeast Maine as a critically needed organic infrastructure and hub facility.

Carly and Aaron’s young family are the 9th generation of Bells to live on Tide Mill Farm. They are well-known throughout all of Maine for their extraordinary, ceaseless and selfless efforts at developing the organic community in their very isolated part of Eastern Maine.  The Bells were instrumental in starting up the organic-farmer-owned MOO Milk company which saved organic dairy farmers in Eastern and Northern Maine.  MOO Milk’s early story was forever memorialized in Cecily Pingree’s epic documentary, Betting the Farm.

Tide Mill Farm has to date raised over $13,000 for their Indiegogo Project, 52% of their stated project goal of $25,000.   Their undertaking is huge in scale – and equally huge in impact.  Carly and Aaron are in serious need of our financial help in order for them to succeed.

Let’s show the Bells the organic community will come together and help ease the burden of some of its very best leaders and dedicated workers as they work to build up the viability of local organic farming
.

Thanks so much for your help!
