| Journalist Chris
Hedges to Speak in Portland This Monday June 16.
Courageous Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges will be the
key-note speaker at the Peace Action Maine Annual Peace Gathering on
Monday, June 16, at 7 pm in Hannaford Hall, USM Portland
Hedges will speak on “The
Wages of Rebellion.”
As a foreign correspondent for the New York Times and other major
newspapers, Hedges witnessed the brutality of war in Central America,
the Balkans, and the Middle East. He was part of a team of New York
Times reporters that won the 2002 Pulitzer prize for their
coverage of global terrorism.
One of the most courageous opponents of
U.S. foreign policy before and during the Iraq war, Hedges sued the U.S. government
in Hedges vs. Obama
(2012) over the unconstitutionality of indefinite
detention of U.S. citizens without habeas
allowed in the National Defense Authorization Act. Noam
and Daniel Ellsberg, among others, joined him in this suit.
Hedges’ books include War Is A Force That Gives Us
Meaning (2002), a finalist for the National Book Critics
Award for Nonfiction; What
Every Person Should Know About War (2003); and Collateral Damage: America’s War
on Iraqi Citizens with Laila Al-Arian (2008). Days of Destruction, Days of
Revolt with Joe Sacco
(2012) records the catastrophe that occurs in places where the
marketplace rules without restraint, and considers the Occupy movement
as a modern-day revolt against the corporate state.
This week, alternative newspaper the Portland
Phoenix published an insightful interview
with Hedges. “We’ve reached a point, Hedges says, where acts of civil
disobedience and mass protest (on the scale of Occupy Wall Street) are
‘a moral imperative. To remain passive in the face of this destruction
is to be complicit.’”
Also at Monday’s
event, Peace Action Maine will award its annual Peace Worker
Award to long-time activist and Maine artist Robert
Shetterly, famous for his “Americans Who Tell the Truth Series”
which includes both Hedges and longtime MOFGA leader Russell Libby.
If we can swing it we hope to attend
and look forward to seeing you there.
