    Snow & White Everywhere.

Aroostook Logging Camp. Circa 1900.  Back in the day, men working as loggers in Maine’s North Woods could earn a-dollar-a-day plus room and board.  The “room” - as you can see - would sometimes offer almost as much fresh air inside as outside.  No doubt, close by the camp fire it was warm in the evenings…
One safe bet in life is that an Aroostook winter will bring plenty of snow.  This year we’ve set a record for lots of snow coming early.  The Weather Office in Caribou has already recorded just under 70” of snow, a record amount for this early in the Winter.  We had a bare Thanksgiving so our snow has all come since after that holiday weekend. Folks are shoveling off their roofs and snow banks are already piled up high.
Snow seems to be everywhere.  Customers have advised us that the area around Raleigh NC is expected to imminently receive at least half-a-foot of snow.  We heard a news broadcast yesterday indicating that parts of California’s Sierra Nevada mountains will be receiving up to a nearly unbelievable twenty feet of snow over the next week.
Wherever you are, keep the snow shovels handy and here’s hoping you have a big supply of dry firewood for the weeks ahead.

.Organic Acreage in USA Hits New Record.

Organic Nation. Organic is growing and there's no turning back.

The good news is farmland in the United States is being converted to organic at an accelerating rate. Now over 4 million acres of American farmland are Certified Organic and more farmers than ever are growing good, safe organic food for our families.
The map above allows you to see how many acres of Certified Organic land is in your State.
Nationwide, the single biggest crop is organic Alfalfa, grown on 800,000 acres. This is followed by: #2 Wheat (482,000 acres); #3 corn (292,000 acres); and #4 Soybeans (150,000 acres).

Meanwhile 13% of all American vegetables grown are now Certified Organic - and 25% of all Carrots being grown in America are organic.

"Acreage of both organic corn and soybeans has seen small increases as a percentage of total acres for both crops in the past few years, according to the report. This may be due to the fact that the U.S. is importing large amounts of organic corn and soybeans, which is depressing the U.S. market and prices for both crops. According Shander, 25 percent of organic corn and 75 percent of organic soybeans used in the U.S. are imported.

"'It’s a global market that is dictating U.S. prices,' he says. 'Demand for organic corn and soybeans is still growing strongly, but production in the U.S. is not growing as fast so more of the production will be international.'"

American acreage increases for the big three annual crops have been seriously hurt because new American food processors - which have bought their way into organic - increasingly choose to purchase questionable, cheap “organic” grain imports.  To date, USDA has done a very poor job investigating complaints of fraudulent “organic” grain imports.  These dubious imports are unfairly competing with bonafide organic grain grown by American farmers.

BREAKING! Major Bombshell: Quarter-Century-FDA-Stance on GMOs Exposed by Study as Fraudulent.

This new research, reported in Alternet, is an absolute blockbuster!  A major new peer-reviewed study from Europe effectively invalidates the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doctrine of “Substantial Equivalence” between genetically-engineered (GE) crops and their traditional counterparts.  The implications of this research are jaw-dropping and absolutely staggering.

Here’s the background.  Almost 25 years ago Vice President Dan Quayle announced adoption of a politically-motivated FDA policy – known as “Substantial Equivalence” - designed to minimize testing requirements and give Biotech’s GE crops a virtual free pass.  History has shown this fraudulent policy asserting the “Substantial Equivalence” of GE crops was in fact authored by none other than Monsanto lawyer/lobbyist Michael Taylor.

The fact remains the doctrine of “Substantial Equivalence” has been scientifically undefendable.  It was the result of Biotech-governmental collusion.  Now, the new landmark research - performed by a team led by Dr. Michael Antoniou of King’s College London - and published in the scientific journal Nature, solidly refutes the entire false premise upon which “Substantial Equivalence” has been based.

These scientific findings totally refute the FDA policy.  GE crops have now been shown to be anything but “Substantially Equivalent” to non-GE crops.  Since safety-testing has to a very large degree been dramatically minimized because of the “Substantial Equivalence” fake belief system, the health and welfare of the American people have been endangered and clearly subordinated to that of private corporate profit.

Sadly, we can expect to see history repeated with a fresh and massive Biotech character assassination campaign waged against Dr. Antoniou and the other honorable scientists who have courageously stood up for the public interest.

“’Our study clearly shows that the GM transformation process results in profound compositional differences in NK603, demonstrating that this GMO corn is not substantially equivalent to its non-GMO counterpart. The marked increase in putrescine and especially cadaverine is a concern since these substances are potentially toxic, being reported as enhancers of the effects histamine, thus heightening allergic reactions, and both have been implicated in the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines with nitrite in meat products. Our results call for a more thorough evaluation of the safety of NK603 corn consumption on a long-term basis.’ Dr. Antoniou stated…

“The establishment of compositional ‘substantial equivalence’ is a key starting point requested by regulatory agencies for assessing the safety of a GMO crop and food. If analysis for nutrients and known toxins shows that the composition of a GMO crop is found to be in a similar range to that present in a corresponding, genetically similar non-GMO variety (often the non-GMO parent), then it is deemed to be ‘substantially equivalent’ and to require little, if any, further safety testing, especially in the USA…

“A total of 117 proteins and 91 small molecule biochemicals (metabolites) were found to be statistically significantly altered in NK603 corn by the GM transformation process.”

Because the approval process of GE crops has been completely bogus and woefully  inadequate, a moratorium should be immediately declared on all GE crops.  Those individuals and corporations responsible for this reckless and dangerous politically-motivated public food policy disaster should be held fully accountable.

Time For Blanket GMO Moratorium. Fraudulent regulatory policy means all GMO approvals were foundationally erroneous.

2 c fresh or frozen blueberries
2 T sugar
2 T water
1 T lemon juice
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 c whole wheat flour
1 c rolled oats
2/3 c brown sugar
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp baking soda
1/2 c butter, melted

In a mixing bowl stir together flour, oats, brown sugar, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, and baking soda. Stir in melted butter until thoroughly combined. Set aside 1 cup of the mixture for topping. Press remaining oat mixture into an ungreased 9-by-9-by-2-inch pan. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes.

In a medium saucepan combine berries, sugar, water, lemon juice and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for about 8 minutes or until slightly thickened; stirring frequently. Remove from heat.

Carefully spread filling on top of baked crust. Sprinkle with reserved oat mixture. Lightly press oat mixture into filling. Bake in the 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes more or until topping is set. Cool in pan on wire rack. Cut into bars.
